A Stroll in Sydney--with Bats!

Last week when I was in Sydney, Australia, I took my usual long walk/hike in the Botanical Gardens . It's close to my hotel and right downtown on the harbor. I just love this place.

I started out walking toward the opera house. Look at the immensity of the building and the texture of the "shells":

Here's a view of Sydney you usually don't see. Looks tropical, doesn't it? And so modern. Lovely. This is a view from a path in the gardens:

Look at the trees in the gardens! They're HUGE. This one's bigger than my entire back yard:

I developed a fascination with the bark of the various trees. It's like a fingerprint; each trunk is unique. Here are a few shots:

Along the way I came upon a flock of cockatiels grazing! At home I see these only in cages. They were adorable:

Once of the most fascinating creatures in the park (other than the muscled male Aussie joggers, that is) are the resident fruit bats. Look at them all! They fill the trees! The first time I saw them I couldn't believe it. One of these days, if I won't get trapped inside the gates, I'd love to be there at dusk when they take flight:

They really ARE cute, like little foxes with wings:

I zoomed in and discovered something I hadn't realized--They don't really hold on with their feet/claws. That's probably just for reassurance. They have these little hooks on the "elbow" of their wings. Is that cool or what?

I hope you enjoyed going on the nature walk through the botanical gardens with me. Happy Halloween!

PS--I thought you might enjoy this video of my Academy roommate's daughter, now a cadet herself, jumping out of a plane!

Sue! the trees were really something, do you have any idea what kind they were? Trunks were unusual.
Who was the brave soul that jumped first to take the picture of the freefall jumper?

Vicki when I was in the gardens today (yes I am back in Sydney) I rechecked the trees and they didn't have signs. Too bad. Judging by the signs by other nearby trees, they seemed to be varieties of fig or hibiscus native to the Southern hemisphere.

The person who filmed the jumper is also a cadet!

Fabulous pictures! Especially the trees. And I never thought I'd enjoy pictures of bats. If you ever get tired of writing, you can be a photographer!

When my kids were at the academy, we parents always said: tell us after you've made your first jump, don't say "I'm jumping tomorrow." Parents need their sleep also.

Wow, I love the bat pics, Susan! Everything looks so beautiful.

Happy Halloweenie to you too!

P/S. Have you seen my first skydive video yet? ;-) I really enjoyed it. I wasn't allowed to jump alone, though.

Gennita, that was amazing! I felt so thrilled for you watching the video (whoever put it together did a great job). Congrats on the jump!

Me, I fly 'em. I don't jump out of 'em. (unless they're on fire or something--lol).

Anyway, SO COOL!

My hubby and I loved the botanical gardens! We didn't realize we were looking at bats initially...let me just say what a surprise it was when we figured it out! lol

I miss Sydney. What a great city!

Love the entry: seeing a new side of Sydney. Makes me wish I could see it too. After making it through a bat episode in my mother's house (she thought a bird had flown into the house) I think I could even survive these. They really are ingeniously made, aren't they. And I definitely love those tree-trunks too. Each one is so individual and the multi-trunking is fascinating.

I've finally finished reading one more of your books, "My Favorite Earthling". I loved it. I keep hoping I'd find "Your Planet or Mine" but my things are just in an awful mess and I'm beginning to fear that I'll never get my stuff sorted out.

I know I'll enjoy the new one that's coming out. The cover looks really sharp.

I know, Kristen, you just don't except them to be there. I at first thought they were fruit!

Aw, Sigrun, thank you so much! It's nice to see you. It's been a while.
